Reflections on the Wellness Industry

I Stopped Believing the Bold Print

A grief counselor’s journey through the broken glass of promises and the quiet power of the small print.

I fumbled the glass dropper and it hit the floor and the liquid sprayed across the white grout and now the floor looks like it has a yellow disease. I sat there on the cold tile and I looked at the mess and I thought about how much money was soaking into the cracks.

It was a small failure but it felt like the end of the world for a minute because I am a grief counselor and I spend my days helping people carry heavy things and sometimes a broken bottle is the thing that makes you want to sit down and never get back up. I tried to look busy when my boss walked by the office later but I was just staring at the stain on the floor and thinking about the promises we buy in bottles.

01. The Big Black Letters

Most of the time we buy the dream that is printed in big black letters and we ignore the truth that is tucked away at the bottom. I used to think the people who made these ads were just trying to trick us and I thought they were bad people for hiding the truth in the gray lines. I was wrong about that and I have to admit it now.

We want to believe that a pill or a drink will fix the parts of us that feel broken and we do not want to read that the results are not typical and we do not want to see that the people in the photos had to work very hard and eat very little to look like that.

The Ghost of Documentation

I have spent a lot of hours watching commercials with the sound turned off and I wait for that one block of text to show up. It is usually gray or a very soft white and it sits at the bottom of the screen for about and then it is gone. That block of text has the sample size and the dates and the truth about the diet and the exercise.

The Window of Truth

00:04s

Someone in a room with a big table and a lot of coffee chose that font and they chose that color to make sure it was a ghost.

It is on the screen long enough to satisfy a lawyer but it is not there long enough for a person to actually read it. Someone in a room with a big table and a lot of coffee chose that font and they chose that color and they timed it with a clock to make sure it was a ghost. It is a design achievement and it is beautiful in a dark way because it allows a company to tell the truth and lie at the same time.

In my work as a grief counselor I see this same thing happen with pain and healing. People come in and they want the big bold headline that says they will feel better in and they want to ignore the small print that says healing is slow and it hurts and it takes a long time.

They look for the shortcut and they search for the exact phrase “results not typical” just to see if anyone else has failed like they have. We are a culture that hates the middle part of things and we want the start and we want the finish and we want to skip the part where we have to show up every day and do the work.

The Illusion of the Magic Tool

“I used to tell my clients that they just needed to find the right tool and then everything would be easy and I was wrong to say that.”

– The Author, reflecting on past advice

I was trying to give them a dream because the truth was too hard to look at. The truth is that there are no magic drops and there are no secret pills that fix a broken heart or a heavy body in a week. There is only the rhythm of the days and the choices we make when no one is looking.

When I look at the wellness market I see a lot of people selling fire and lightning. They put twenty ingredients in a pill and they call it a secret formula and they promise that your body will turn into a furnace. It sounds great in the bold print but the small print usually says that you will feel like your heart is jumping out of your chest and you will crash at and you will need to buy more and more to feel anything at all. It is a cycle of noise and it is exhausting to stay on that ride.

Finding Honest Things

I have started to look for the things that do not promise the world in 48-point type. I want the things that are honest about what they are and what they do. I look at something like

alka melt

and I see a different way of talking to people.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Green Tea

Berberine

Cayenne Pepper

It is not a list of twenty things you cannot pronounce and it is just four things that make sense. You put a dropper under your tongue or in some water and you go about your day. It does not promise that you will wake up as a new person tomorrow and it just says it will help with the hunger and the energy and the way your body handles the food you eat.

It is a quiet approach and I think we need more quiet things. The world is very loud and it is always trying to sell us a version of ourselves that does not exist. We spend so much time looking at the screen and waiting for the next big thing to save us but the things that actually work are usually the ones that show up every day and do not make a lot of noise.

The bottle I broke on the floor was full of a bright orange liquid that promised to give me the energy of a teenager and it just gave me a stain that I cannot get out of the grout.

I think about the man who sat in the meeting and approved the four-second timer for the fine print. He knew that if he left it on the screen for people might actually read it and they might realize that the dream was a bit more complicated than the pictures suggested. By keeping it short he protected the dream and he kept the machine running.

A New Counseling Mandate

I have started to tell my clients that they should read the fine print first. I tell them to look at the parts of their life that are not typical and to find the beauty in the slow parts. If you are trying to change your body or your mind you have to realize that you are not a commercial and you are a human being and you do not have to fit into a four-second window.

Not a 4-second race

WEEK 1

DAY 90

DAY 180+

You can take the long way and you can use things that are gentle and you can stay consistent for or instead of trying to win the race in a week.

The four ingredients in those drops are simple and they have been around for a long time. Green tea is just a leaf and cayenne is just a pepper and berberine comes from a root and apple cider vinegar comes from fruit. There is no magic there and there is just chemistry and biology working together in a way that does not demand that you burn your life down to see a change.

It is a sustainable rhythm and it is the kind of thing that fits into a life that is already full of work and kids and grief and broken glass. I finally got most of the orange stain out of the floor but if you look closely you can still see where the liquid soaked in.

It is a reminder that I was moving too fast and I was reaching for something that promised too much. I have a new bottle now and it is different and it does not have a giant list of stimulants that make my hands shake. I take the dropper and I put it in my water and I do not expect a miracle and I just expect a little bit of help as I walk through my day.

We are so afraid of the truth that we have built an entire world where the truth is considered a legal burden. We put it in the gray lines and we put it in the terms of service that no one reads and we put it in the back of the book. But the gray lines are where the real life happens and the results that are not typical are usually the only ones that actually matter.

I would rather have a small truth that I can trust than a big lie that makes me feel good for a minute before I drop it on the floor.

The gray line at the bottom of the page is the only part of the bottle that never lies about the water inside.

Looking for Steady Light

If you want to move forward you have to stop looking for the fire and start looking for the steady light. You have to find the things that are made in the right way and that do not try to hide the facts from you. I like that the things I use now are made in a place that is registered and checked and they do not use stuff that is modified in a lab. It is just a simple way to stay on track and it does not require me to believe in a fairy tale.

I still sit with people who are sad and I still listen to their stories and I still see them look for the quick way out of the dark. I tell them about the dropper on the floor and I tell them about the gray lines on the screen. I tell them that it is okay to be not typical and it is okay to take a long time to get where you are going. We are not ads and we are not dreams and we are just people trying to find a rhythm that we can keep up until the sun goes down and the day is done.

The next time you see a commercial with a loud song and a fast car and a person who looks like they have never felt a day of pain in their life just wait for the end. Wait for the gray text and try to read as much as you can before it fades away. You will find that the truth is right there in front of you and it was never really hidden and it was just waiting for you to decide that you were ready to see it.

Once you start reading the small print you cannot go back to the big letters and the world starts to look a lot more real and a lot more manageable. You do not need the 48-point type to tell you who you are and you just need the truth and a little bit of time and a steady hand so you do not drop the bottle again.
