I’ve been working out for a long period now, and over the entire years, my choices have evolved and changed. You start with aerobics classes in church basements where we brought our own steps and weights, I moved to full gyms with home cardio equipment, classes, and weight rooms. The very first time I ventured into the weight training area, I felt like I had been going into the boy’s locker room.
Everyone seemed to know what they were doing and all the machines and heavy weights appeared so intimidating! However, through trial and many mistakes and some very useful fitness center goers, I learned how to use the equipment and make the majority of my memberships. It required some time to get the right fit (at one time I actually belonged to four different gyms), but if you look beyond the fundamentals, most gyms provide their own take on your workout. Before we discuss specific types of gyms, there are many factors you should think about before becoming a member of ANY fitness center. Location and Hours- Ideally you should join a fitness center near your home or work.
If it’s too much away you almost certainly won’t go. Ensure that the fitness center will most probably at the times you’d be most likely to work out. Cleanliness- Gyms are a breeding ground for bacteria, so look for clean benches, clean handles on cardio equipment and wipes or squirt bottles on the fitness center floor.
Pay close focus on the health of the locker room, showers, and bathrooms. Equipment-Make sure that the fitness center has a variety of types of cardio and weight training equipment. Check to see that the equipment is in good shape and that some of the equipment is new. However, if you absolutely cannot carry the thought of working out in front of other people, but you need assistance in starting out or getting on the right track back again, a smaller, one-on-one fitness facility can work for you. Many offer fitness packages and allow you to come in to use the machines on your off times as well.
